Tominaga's genre bending romp is hard to describe: The story revolves around an itinerant X-ray technician, a mobster, and the woman he wants to marry - and who happens to be part of a lucrative salamander maintenance foundation. The 150-year-old Edo-period salamander is Kinjiro, displayed at the 1867 Universal Exposition, and is a national treasure... Episodic but not without structure, this surreal comedy is rife with metaphors and themes best enjoyed by just sitting back and letting it wash over you.
