Love Songs

Dir: Christophe Honoré France 2007 Colour 95 min English subtitles Cast: Louis Garrel, Ludivine Sagnier, Chiara Mastroianni
If the hyper-reality (some might say artifice) of movie musicals isn't to your tastes, Christophe Honoré's (Inside Paris) latest may prove to be just the tonic. Romance and tragedy swirl around Ismael, his long-term girlfriend Julie, his colleague Alice, Julie's sister Jeanne, and a high school crush, Erwann. Love Songs plays it straight and carries the narrative and the emotions forward through its songs with a refreshingly unfussy grace and ease. Definitely not Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Dir: Olivier Assayas France 2007 Colour 106 min English subtitles Cast: Asia Argento, Michael Madsen, Kelly Lin, Carl Ng, Kim Gordon
From Clean director Assayas comes this thriller starring cult favourites Asia Argento and Michael Madsen, and co-starring Hong Kong actors Carl Ng and Kelly Lin. Sandra's flight from Paris, where the action begins, takes her to Hong Kong and deeper into a duplicitous partnership with her new boyfriend Lester (Ng) and his wife Sue (Lin). Nothing's what it seems - least of all Sandra.

An adolescent groupie (Isild Le Besco) zeroes in on her Blondie-like idol (Emmanuelle Seigner) after the singer chances to cross her orbit on a publicity tour. Gradually their lives intertwine as, with near-operatic intensity, the film delves into the emotional dependency on both sides of celebrity culture.
